This award-winning project - taking out the 2021 statewide Master Builders Tasmania Award for Excellence in the category of Renovation / Addition $400,000 to $650,000 - is a stunning architectural addition to an existing Californian Bungalow situated in the leafy Launceston suburb of Newstead. Designed by Felix Blackman from Blackman Creative, and brought to life by Inhabit Construction, the well-crafted, white-brick garden living, kitchen and lounge pavilion is a masterpiece.

The simple, raw architectural details featured in this addition include glazed ‘La Paloma, Castellana’ white bricks from Austral Bricks - providing colour purity and simplicity. Vertical spotted gum timber battens soften the adjacent dark ‘Night Sky’ wall cladding on the exterior.

Internally, simple, honest and raw interior palettes are the order of the day - with clear-coated Tasmanian oak skirting boards throughout, deep reveal door jambs, and no architraves in sight.

A ‘salt & pepper’ aggregate cut and ground concrete slab with hydronic heating forms a smart and immaculately-finished flooring. Coupled with commercial-grade double glazing throughout, a solar array and smart lighting, energy efficiency boxes are effortlessly ticked.

The result is a skillful crafting by the Inhabit Construction team of a sympathetic, precisely built and beautiful building.
